Early one morning as I was headed back from a local corner store I noticed a curious scene taking place. Well, curious to me because I remember. I remember exactly what it feels like to be hassled by the police for little or no reason at all. I remember the looks on the faces of passerbys; the same sort of vapid expression a person exhibits when watching television. For what it's worth, I may as well have been some "bad guy" on TV, everyone looks guilty when being spoken down to by a police officer.
As a youth, myself and a few friends were miscatagorized as gang members after the four or more law was passed and have definitely had more than my share of unpleasant experiences w/ the police and have learned a bit about reading their behaviors. I know the look on their faces when they are trying to figure out what they can possibly charge you w/ after passing the questioning, search, and breathalizer. My experiences have made me question many things, including all of the things that were taught to me regarding "gang members." Frankly, I don't think anyone should be treated the way my friends and I were, "gang member" or not. I do think that society should be a bit kinder and more creative when attempting to control it's urban phenomenon.
So, I hung out for a bit...mainly because I recognized the "what can I possibly charge you w/" look and know that police officers are much less likely to violate people's rights when they are aware that they are being observed. They didn't like me taking pictures, but hey, it's my public domain too so i snapped a few and waited until they let the young man go.

I did that once in October of 2008 and ended up spending a small slice of that October in Marin General under the knife of either a brilliant young neurosurgeon or a saw bones hack (i am still undecided) and under the influence of the lovely nurses' and their even lovelier medicine cabinets. I had hoped these images were really about something important like the Health Care crisis and latent Reform Bill, that way I might have an excuse to vent my disgust w/ all of the xenophobic, anti-immigrant sentiments surrounding this reform bill. That way, I could have let some people know how repulsive they appear, fighting w/ "others" over the tiniest scraps, "others' w/ whom they have much more in common than they can apparently see. I would have really liked that. As it turns out, I have just made more self absorbed crap...bon appétit!

In this epoch of Photoshop and various post production editing programs it seems a good deal of in camera effects have been misplaced. Mitchell Lopez is the first person I've observed applying multiple exposure techniques to digital photography. He has mastered this method, creating epic images that will blow your brains clean out and then eat them for dessert. What follows are my humble attempts using the Mitchell Lopez Method. I can't wait 'til this cat starts posting his pictures!

A few years ago, I found a size 13 prosthetic leg poking out of a pile of rubbish at an old naval shipyard in San Francisco. I imagine that it was time for the genie to go back into the lamp and the leg just didn't fit; it's also possible that a shark spit it out and it washed ashore. I'm sure it wasn't very nice of me to take it, no matter how sure I was that the original owner didn't simply misplace it or lose it at the horse races to a bad debt. I know that I have a somber fondness for it. I like that it is perfectly phony, and unlike breast implants, Astro Turf, or too much blush, even the most self righteous spoil sport wouldn't dare say a word against it.

We decided to play a sort of Dada photo game. Annette, Mitchell and I each brought a grab bag of objects that we hoped to work into a few scenes. We had a typewriter, some candles, paper bag masks drawn by Annette, a few changes of clothing, and our three cameras. While what follows are my snaps of what happened, it would be wrong to call them my pictures. That is one of the problems with taking pictures, it always seems to involve theft and some small measure of deceit. Anyways, here is what my lens captured of what we three made that night:

So, this is the way we found the bedroom upon returning, but this is not the way we left it. We made good use of the plastic flowers, but we did not put them there. Again, this begs at an unanswered question: What was this place? I can't say that I care too much for the "who" but the "what" is of concern. What happened here?

Throwing Glances at Stone Houses

It has the appearance of a cobblestone railroad pump-house. The minimal research I attempted on the house's history lead me nowhere so I was left to make up stories about the place. I mused that it was once a station on the underground railroad and later the scene of a triple murder/suicide. Whatever it was I cannot be too sure, but for now the ground beneath it is up for sale: urgency. I love urgency.

The door was swinging open, an invitation. Annette explores one of the more interesting rooms, the bedroom.

Mitchell investigates a display shelf of sorts in the the upstairs room. Objects contained on this display shelf include: several shortened straws cut at a diagonal and stationed in a rusty Altoids box, various burned out candles, a surgical glove filled w/ bottles of nail polish with a tube of lipstick poking out of the index finger, (i assume someone was trying to make a friend) and a few scattered packs of matches...hmmmm.

Having resisted the urge to share some of the close ups I took of the aforementioned items; for better or worse, I feel a deep compulsory obligation to share this drawing that someone had posted on the side wall. This drawing (probably improved by the rains and the leaky roof) details two ants separated by an opening in the ground. As the ground splits a divide between the two of them, one of the ants appears to be handing off a baby ant to the other; a tragic love story complete w/ misplaced children.
Regardless as to what this place might have been, one thing is startlingly clear in all of this; this house has been or is being squatted...Hmmmm, again. As the sun began to rise we decided to split, our heads on fire w/ the numerous possibilities for the photo-shoot that was soon to take place.
